The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a report titled ”Challenges in Rural Banking Access.” They found that rural communities are more likely to be ”banking deserts,” that rural consumers pay more for credit, and that medical debt affects access to credit, housing, and employment for rural consumers. We review this report and the Bureau’s new ”Rural Initiative” to address the particular needs of rural communities.
