The Brittney Griner Russia Prison swap story is trending like crazy today so let me cover the good, the bad and the ugly of this prisoner swap. Brittney Griner has officially been freed as part of a prisoner swap between Russia and America. President Biden stated “After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones, and she should’ve been there all along.” While the exact details are not known, it’s expected that Griner was traded for weapon trafficker Victor Bout. If this deal was not made, Griner would have spent 9 years behind bars for a simple marijuana related charge.

Unfortunately Paul Whelan, a former US marine veteran is still behind bars even though he was originally supposed to be included in this deal. Biden addressed the issue stating “Sadly, for totally illegitimate reasons, Russia is treating Paul’s case differently than Brittney’s. And while we have not yet succeeded in securing Paul’s release, we are not giving up. We will never give up.”
So the good of this story is an American has been swapped and is able to come back to the safety of our own country.
While Griner’s release is great news, some have noted that this highly broadcasted prisoner swap could encourage other countries to capture Americans in the hopes of getting one of their own freed. So just be sure to be very careful if you’re traveling outside of the country.
After I researched this story a new shocking update regarding the prisoner swap came out. It turns out that Biden was not solely responsible for Griner’s release. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman reportedly spoke with Russia to make the deal happen. After these details emerged, The Daily Mail stated the deal was “soaked in blood” likely referring to the time The Crown Prince ordered the killing of an American journalist. Biden relying on the Saudi Crown Price to make progress does not live up to his campaign promises of making the crown prince pay for what he did.
So it seems Mohammed Bin Salman and Saudi Arabia are actually the reason this prisoner swap was made. But of course Biden and the white house are taking full credit.
However, as relieved as democrat senator Bob Mendez is, he said the swap was deeply disturbing.
