Wondering how to spend food stamps? We’ve found some tips and tricks that can help you make the most of your food benefits.
I’m Nicole from Low Income Relief, where we help millions of people save money and get free stuff.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, is a program that helps low income people purchase food. Benefits are provided as funds on an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card.
If you’ve got food stamps, here are some things you need to know.
First, using an EBT card is easy!
If you’re new to food stamps, it may seem scary or awkward to make purchases with EBT. Don’t worry; it’s easy! Even if you’re mixing eligible and non-eligible items, you can pay for all of your purchases together at once. There’s no need to separate food and non-food items or anything like that. Scan the EBT card first and it will pay for the eligible items. Then, pay for the remainder with a different form of payment like cash or a debit card. Easy!
Second, you can use your benefits at more than just grocery stores.
One big misconception about food stamps is that you can only make purchases at grocery stores. That’s not true! Your benefits can be used at farmers markets, convenience stores and even bulk retailers like Costco or Sam’s Club. In some areas, you can use your benefits at you-pick strawberry fields, community supported agriculture programs and more. You can get a full list of places you can use your EBT card at LowIncomeRelief.com (https://lowincomerelief.com/can-use-ebt-card/)
Third, you can buy seeds and other things with EBT!
This is one of my favorite secrets. You can purchase seeds and produce-bearing plants with your benefits! If you have space for a garden, you can make your food benefits go so much further.
